7 Awkward and Fun Things Inside the RV Wanderlust Rig

April 26, 2014 by Eric Highland 5 Comments

People online often ask us about the inside of our RV. For those new to RV Wanderlust, our rig’s name is Meriwether and he’s 40′ of diesel-powered goodness…and he’s our home.

Brittany did an interior photo tour post earlier that folks had been asking for. But I figured I’d share some of the more fun and awkward things about the inside of the RV Wanderlust rig Meriwether, for those who follow our blog faithfully.

It will let you get to know us a bit more from a personal side too. Here we go…

1. Theodore Roosevelt

A photo of President Theodore Roosevelt inside the RV Wanderlust Rig Meriwether

Theodore Roosevelt watches Over Brittany as she cooks

Just above the convection / microwave oven is a print of the 26th President of the United States. Truth be told, Brittany is obsessed with the man, and she’s got me obsessed now too. I think Brittany has read practically ever book known to man on President Roosevelt. He was much more than a president, and if you want to see just how cool he was, read The River Of Doubt by Candice Millard.

2. Brittany’s family photo

A photo of Brittany Highland's Family

Brittany’s family photo is not awkward, but where it’s placed is…and the angle of their gaze makes it even more awkward

From left to right: Timothy (Brittany’s youngest brother), Brittany, David (Brittany’s father), Simone (Brittany’s mother), and Adam (Brittany’s younger brother)

Now the photo is a really nice one and not awkward at all. What IS awkward is where it is placed and the angle of their gaze from the photo. You see that glass door on the left? That is the shower door. So whenever I get out of the shower, they are all looking right at me and smiling! If you are ever our guest for an extended period, they will be looking right at you in all of your ‘nakey’ glory.

3. What the heck is it?

The light fixture over the dinette in Meriwether, the RV Wanderlust rig

Meriwether was built in 2004. We know he’s a bit dated in his decor, but this is a little out of control. It’s our light fixture over the dinette. It looks like something that belongs in a sci-fi movie! Like a warp coil for a spaceship or something.

4. You’d never guess what this is

A stuffed little keychain bison in Meriwether

This is a little stuffed bison. I know, I know.

That, friends, is a bison keychain. I know, I know…it looks nothing like a bison. So this little guy falls into both the awkward and fun categories! Ok, so Brittany and I were in Chattanooga, TN. While there we made the obligatory stop at the Chattanooga Choo Choo and found this little scrapbooking store called The Little Lace Lady. I purchased a tiny little $0.30 bison for Brittany at the register and the owner of the shop gave us over $5.00 in freebies, one of which was this little bison keychain. Now we know that it’s hardly recognizable as a bison, but it was the heart of the shop owner that counted. So now this little guy has a prominent place in Meriwether, hanging out above the washing machine area.

5. Worms

Superworms are part of the cargo of Meriwether

We carry a supply of superworms!

We carry a supply of superworms onboard. These are for our 1st Mate, Trogdor the Burninator. It may be a little awkward that we intentionally have worms inside the rig. Interestingly enough, they make no noise whatsoever and do not smell. Trogdor is a bit finicky and he’ll eat them, but only when he’s in the mood. I guess if he doesn’t eat them, I could always use them as bait. But I’d have to get a fishing pole first.

6. Solitary wine glass

A wine glass inside Meriwether

Just one wine glass

We only have one wine glass in Meriwether. Brittany enjoys a drink of wine from time to time, and especially when friends are over. But I’ve been sober for over 20 years, so we really only need one. Our friend Charles Kincaid of Austin was kind enough to give us this wine glass. And though it may be awkward that we only have one, it’s for a good reason. So if you are coming over and want to share a drink of wine with Brittany, be prepared to drink out of a regular cup or bring your own wine glass!

7. Secret hiding spot

A secret hiding spot in Meriwether

It’s here, but we’re not saying where!

It’s true. We have a secret hiding spot inside Meriwether. You know, just in case there is a zombie outbreak or some sort of crazy attack on our home. When space is at a premium like it is on RVs, it’s rare to find a rig with a spot like this. But it’s large enough to keep a well-armed person completely hidden from view. We can’t say where it is though, because we never know when one of our readers might become a zombie. -E

Hello! Enjoyed this post and your entire blog. We are pretty sure we have seen your dinette light fixture in a Star Trek episode, not sure which one though.
Pretty thrilled to see Teddy Roosevelt hanging in your kitchen, since ‘The River of Doubt’ is one of my fav books. History and reading are two of my many passions. Almost getting history overload on our travels up historic Hwy 395 in CA. Have you and Meriwether ever been here? Our first time and we are loving it! Anyway…………..”Safe travels to you”, and hopefully we can meet somewhere down the road, someday. Take care!

RVNomads2too, Thanks for checking out the article and leaving a comment. We really love to hear from folks who are reading the blog. Glad you are enjoying our adventures!

We love Theodore Roosevelt! And History! And Books! haha. Right now, I’m reading Stephen Ambrose “Undaunted Courage” about Meriwether Lewis. His relationship with Thomas Jefferson was incredible and much more intimate than I knew. (I’m still only on chapter 12)

We have not been West of Texas as of yet. Our journeys have just begun though, and we hope to make it up that way someday. We’d love to connect with you both down the road. Just accepted your friend request on RVillage. Thanks for reaching out! ~ Eric

I was more than pleased to bring my own wine glass… Especially since B supplied the wine! No arguments here.
And remind me not to ask for a shower next time we connect. That is, indeed, AWKWARD!

Eventually you will run out of Southern States to explore. At that point, since you are such a fan of Theodore Roosevelt, you should head to Medora, ND. Medora is all about the west, and they have a gentleman there who does an excellent job of portraying President Roosevelt. Plus, you are now next door to Theodore Roosevelt National Park, which is absolutely stunning and full of bison. I originally wasn’t excited about going there, but once we arrived so did my enthusiasm and we enjoyed everything about our stay there except for the part about having to leave.

    • Brittany Highland

If all goes as planned (which it rarely does when you’re RVing), we’ll be there in September!
