What It’s Like to Work on the Road as a Fulltime RVer

October 23, 2015 by BrittanyHighland 13 Comments

Purpose of Life Quote Eleanor Roosevelt

Not knowing how to earn an income on the road is the number one factor that keeps people who want to fulltime RV from doing it.

I actually made that up, but I’m pretty sure it’s true.

If nothing else, it was certainly true for us. If it’s also true for you, let our story be motivation and inspiration. With planning and courage, you can live in an RV and travel fulltime.

RVing is personalized in so many ways, from the RV you choose, to the types of campgrounds you like to stay at, to the way you earn an income. Rather than providing an exhaustive guide to working on the road, my goal is to share what we’ve experienced. I hope you can relate to the pros and cons Eric and I assessed as we prepared to change our lifestyle, and be inspired by what it’s actually like to be a fulltime, working RVer. [Read more…]

Getting to Know Xscapers, Organization for Working Age RVers

October 19, 2015 by BrittanyHighland 1 Comment

Xscapers Convergence in Albuquerque

We left the day before this picture was taken, but we did have THIS much fun!

There are numerous membership programs for RVers, each with their own perks. Signing up for all of them is budget suicide, but deciding which ones are right for you can save a lot of headaches. To date, we’ve signed up [Read more…]

We Survived Our First Full Week of Dry Camping (And You Will, Too)

October 15, 2015 by BrittanyHighland 28 Comments

RV Dry Camping

Dry camping alongside friends: RV Outlawz; Drive, Dive, Devour; Nosh Bus; The Roaming Pint

I guess we put the spoiler in the article title…sorry about that. Before I get into the dramatic story of our first full week of RV dry camping, I should make a few things clear:

  1. If you dry camp regularly, this article will make you laugh at us. So please stop reading now.
  2. Eric and I are not mechanically-inclined.
  3. We like our creature comforts. When we’re comfortable, we’re more productive during the work week and have fewer distractions. That’s what we tell ourselves. In our minds, comfort has always been inextricably linked to full hookups. Anything else is just complicated.
  4. I wish someone had written this article a year and a half ago when we were going on the road. My FOMO has kicked in-how many beautiful places have I missed because I didn’t know I could survive dry camping?

RV Bedroom Makeover

October 8, 2015 by BrittanyHighland 19 Comments

Before RV Bedroom Makeover

Before our RV bedroom makeover, our old cornice box, headboard and wallpaper

I freaked out when I saw the inside of our RV for the first time.

On the surface, it seemed so dated, so in need of a refresh. It took Eric a while to convince me that everything I saw could be replaced, and that the “bones” were what counted. So we made sure the batteries and tires were new, and that the roof looked good and there wasn’t any water damage.

In the year and a half that we’ve lived in Meriwether, we’ve done some projects here and there. I painted our dinette cushions and living room trim, and reupholstered our living room cornice boxes with a little help from our friends.

It wasn’t until after those projects that we decided on a nautical theme for our RV, plus our kitten tore up my gorgeous cornice boxes, so the living area is in overall need of attention. But the good news is that we hadn’t touched our bedroom, except for investing in new bedding, so we were able to build on a blank slate as we took on our RV bedroom makeover. [Read more…]

How to Protect the Front of Your RV

April 3, 2015 by Eric Highland 5 Comments

How to Protect the Front of Your RV

Brittany and I have been RVing around the country full time for over a year now and we have to tell you that it’s truly a wonderful life - everything we ever hoped it would be and more.

For those of you who follow our blog at RV Wanderlust, you know we live an exciting and crazy life. But this life, just like any other, presents it’s own unique challenges.

While we love the road, the road does not necessarily love our home. All homeowners want to protect their investment, and it’s no different for those of us full time RVers who live in a moving home. Any RVer who has been on the road for any length of time will tell you that arguably the hardest part of your RV to protect from miles of travel is the front end cap. [Read more…]

RVillage: Platform for RVers We Use Daily

March 13, 2015 by Eric Highland Leave a Comment

RVillage Logo

To be honest, whenever someone tells us about a new online platform, page or group for RVers, we kind of wince and half heartedly agree to take a look. It’s not that we’re too cool for school, believe me. It’s just that we’re already a member of so many, and most of them we hardly ever use.

Hey, it isn’t personal, we just have a life to live and we don’t want to always be online if you know what I mean. After all, we’re supposed to be out exploring the country, right?

So Many Platforms, So Little Time

But this wasn’t always the case. When we first started full time RVing just over a year ago, we tried to be involved in every group, page and platform we could. [Read more…]

Update on RV Repairs and Maintenance: Second Half of 2014

January 10, 2015 by BrittanyHighland 10 Comments

Camping World RV Service

Taking care of our home is very important to us!

Any home you own, whether it has wheels or not, is going to need repairs and maintenance. It’s just a fact of life. Considering we live in a house composed of thousands of parts that are constantly being bumped and shaken, our first year on the road was not so bad as far as repairs were concerned.

The biggest inconvenience (and biggest difference between an RV and “normal” house) is that we have to vacate the premises whenever repairs are done. This takes careful scheduling, and usually means we collect maintenance items to knock out all at one time.

We’ve visited three repair shops since our big breakdown in July, which I want to describe here. I’ll conclude with an overview of all our repairs and maintenance in 2014, as well as associated costs. [Read more…]

2014 in Review: Stats, Photos, Adventures

January 9, 2015 by BrittanyHighland 10 Comments

When we saw our friends at Watsons Wander publish a blog post about their 2014, we wanted one too! We don’t think they’ll mind that we’re borrowing their idea and format. After all, we did help them find some pretty yummy BBQ in Gulfport, MS in 2014!

Since the start of our life as full-time RVers on February 21, 2014, these statistics describe our travels in a nutshell:

Number of States: 10

Number of Overnight Stops: 38

Where We Stayed: 1 state fairground, 1 national forest campground, 2 county parks, 4 state parks, 2 parking lots (visitor center, Lowe’s), 2 service center campgrounds, 9 military bases and 15 private campgrounds.

Free vs. Paid: Staying free isn’t our goal, but 3/38 locations we stayed in 2014 were free.

Camping Fees

Total: $7,854.00

Monthly Average: $654.50 [Read more…]

Building Friendships When You Live in an RV

September 6, 2014 by Eric Highland 6 Comments

Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art… It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things that gives value to survival.
-C.S. Lewis

As full-time RVers, we’re often asked, “What is the most difficult thing about full-time RVing?”

I could easily make a list of our standard answers. But one that we feel merits discussion, is building friendships when you live in an RV full time.

Eric and Brittany Highland with Ryan and Michele Newbrough

Our newest RV friends Ryan and Michele Newbrough. We’ve been talking for months and finally met up in Virginia Beach. We’ve already gone out twice and have a third time planned before we leave the area.

We start with the premise that friendship is usually predicated on the fact that you spend time in person with those whom you call friends. [Read more…]

Tackling Mold in Our RV

August 22, 2014 by BrittanyHighland 17 Comments

Mold in RV

Yikes! Mold in our RV!

“Oh…there’s mold down here” is sure to make anyone’s heart sink. We’ve noticed a couple of stray leaks near our front windshield during this abnormally wet summer. But just a couple of weeks ago, Eric noticed a patch of mold in the far corner of the carpeting under our steering wheel. Yikes!

The growth can’t be too old because I like to consider us observant. It’s also not due to any leak we know of, which means there’s water coming in from a mysterious location (not good). We haven’t been able to fix the source of the problem yet, but we jumped on treating what we could see. And it wasn’t pretty… [Read more…]
