Say Hello to Our New RV

March 9, 2019 by BrittanyHighland Leave a Comment

RV Wanderlust Bought Famagogo's Winnebago
We have a new RV home, thanks to our friends at Famagogo-Peter and Kathy Holcombe

Anyone who has said yes to full-time travel knows this lifestyle is riddled with surprises. Sometimes they’re hard and make you want to give up. Other times, the surprises are just fun.

We didn’t expect to get another RV so soon. Many of you know we had our 2019 itinerary planned out, and expected to spend the whole year overlanding in our Jeep Wrangler.

But then I was on Instagram and this happened…

5 Years of Full-time Travel RV Wanderlust

I hadn’t planned on writing today. But as we mark our 5-year nomadiversary, it seems too much of a milestone to leave unturned.

Our Full-time RV Home of 5 Years Has a New Family

December 29, 2018 by BrittanyHighland Leave a Comment

RV Wanderlust Motorhome Sold
Our RV home of five years, the Tiffin Phaeton named Meriwether

Only we would come up with the idea of moving out of an RV into a Jeep, hosting three family members within the week before our move, which was also the week before Christmas, while simultaneously planning a two-month trip into the interior of Mexico-as new full-time overlanders.

As we’ve shared, we went back and forth about selling Meriwether. Is it really wise to sell our only home out from under us, without any immediate plans to get a new one? But we jumped, forcing ourselves to be brave and chase our long-term dreams.

Why We’re Saying Goodbye to Our Diesel RV After 5 Years of Fulltime Travel

October 31, 2018 by BrittanyHighland Leave a Comment

Diesel RV for Sale RV Wanderlust

If you’re surprised, then imagine how we feel! In February 2014, with zero RV experience, we emptied our two-bedroom apartment in Austin and moved into a 10-year-old Tiffin Phaeton. We named him Meriwether, after explorer Meriwether Lewis of Lewis and Clark. At the time, I was the youngest fulltime RVer I knew.

We’ve always had this RV. We’ve always said it’s the perfect home for us. We’ve never regretted buying it.

But life has changed, along with our family, goals, and preferences. And so it’s time to say goodbye to our Class A diesel RV after five years of fulltime travel.

Here’s why.

Announcing RV Wanderlust Travel Plans for 2019

August 13, 2018 by BrittanyHighland Leave a Comment

RV Wanderlust Travel Plans 2019

Strange things have been happening around here. We rehomed our cats. Then when our RV fridge broke, we bought some weird cooler-size contraption instead of fixing it right away. And we’ve been generally cryptic about what’s coming up for us.

We won’t keep you guessing any longer. We’re ready to announce our RV Wanderlust travel plans for 2019! But before we lay out the details, we should share a few important points to set the context. [Read more…]

Announcing RV Wanderlust Travel Plans for 2018

RV Wanderlust Travel Plans 2018

Zion National Park by Jamie Hagan

We’re excited about our 2018 trip. This may be our most ambitious plan since we started RVing almost four years ago. Our 2016 “Grand Loop Trip” plan had a slightly higher mileage, but our 2018 “Mountain State Trip” involves dangling off cliffs, 4-wheel drive, petting wild bison, and mountain lion sightings.

We might not do all those things. Maybe we will. [Read more…]

Our Hurricane Irma Evacuation Saga

Last week when we decided to evacuate Savannah as Hurricane Irma approached, I wasn’t happy. The next day as we drove west to Macon, GA, we found out Rivers End Campground on Tybee Island, where we had been staying, had [Read more…]

Finally Sharing RV Wanderlust Travel Plans for 2017

March 28, 2017 by BrittanyHighland 21 Comments

RV Wanderlust Travel Plans 2017

Some of you have probably been wondering whether we’re ever going to get back on the road. Now that we have a baby with us, maybe we’ll decide to put down roots and abandon the fulltime RV lifestyle.

Eeeek! Even writing that sentence grates my sensibilities like fingernails on a chalkboard. We have been dying to start traveling again!

Let’s backtrack. We arrived in Central Texas at the end of July 2016. I was at the end of my second trimester and needed to be close to my OBGYN for appointments. After Caspian Theodore was born on Dec. 3, 2016, we had to stick around for his doctor’s appointments and vaccinations.

…We were itching to travel somewhere around August.

Oh, we’ve ping-ponged around a bit. San Marcos, Austin, Fredericksburg, Corpus Christi, back to San Marcos. It’s all been good and necessary, but we haven’t sniffed out any new trails in forever.

So we’re definitely traveling again. That’s settled. But when, and to where? Plans for the rest of 2017 are still tentative, but we have an idea of our general route. And we’re ready to share it! [Read more…]

Why We’re Cutting Our 2016 Grand Loop Trip Short

June 2, 2016 by BrittanyHighland 17 Comments

We embarked from our home base of Austin, TX at the beginning of January to take our most ambitious RV trip to date. The aptly-named Grand Loop Trip would take us west to California through New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada, then north to Seattle before cutting east to North Dakota and going back south to Texas. It would take eleven months and more than 5,700 miles.

Alas, our epic Grand Loop Trip is not to be. [Read more…]

Can Fulltime RVers Travel Internationally?

February 25, 2016 by BrittanyHighland 8 Comments

Fulltime RVers Travel Internationally

For those of us who fulltime RV, it’s more challenging to take a vacation away from home than it ever was when we lived in a stick-and-brick. The challenges held Eric and me back for a long time, until we couldn’t wait any longer.

We just got back from two weeks visiting Cancun, Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula-without our RV. It was a trip we dreamed about for years. The process was hardly without its ruts, but we don’t regret the decisions we made. Instead, we’re glad for the challenges because we learned a ton. Most importantly, we feel equipped to do more international travel in future. Europe in 2017!

You may be curious about what it looks like for fulltime RVers to be away from their RVs for a long period of time. While our choices may not work for everyone, we hope you can take some useful knowledge away from our experience. [Read more…]
