Best RV Facebook Groups, Forums, and Blogs We’ve Found So Far

September 16, 2020 by Eric Highland 8 Comments

The last few nights have been restless. My stomach is in knots, my mind is running at max capacity, and yet we move forward.

With no practical experience whatsoever, we’re selling most everything we own and moving into a 2003 40’ long Phaeton Class A Diesel Pusher RV by Tiffin Motorhomes.

Truth be told, I really don’t know how the RV starts and there is some random lever on the left of the driver’s seat that when you pull it up makes this whooosh sound, much like the big Greyhound buses. Oh yeah, and there is that ominous cut-off switch near the door that seems rather important. ~shifts eyes~

As you can tell, we’re truly starting in a complete state of ignorance. As of this writing, we literally know nothing but what we’ve read online. (We don’t even have an owners manual as we got a used RV that was missing one.)

That’s how we started this guide back in 2014, when we first wrote it. Since then, we’ve become “old school,” and have created a resource or two ourselves.

Is Harvest Hosts Worth It?

January 22, 2020 by BrittanyHighland Leave a Comment

The times, they are a-changin’. As Americans flock to the road in RVs, rejecting consumerism and embracing the value of experiences, RV campgrounds are filling up weeks in advance. And when you do find an open spot, it’s guaranteed to be more expensive than ever.

Enter Harvest Hosts, an experience-based RV camping option opening over a thousand unique locations to its members.

I run across few RVers these days who don’t know about Harvest Hosts. The company’s marketing strategy is stellar. But just because you’ve heard of it, doesn’t mean you’ve signed up.

Making Room for a Toddler in an RV

November 19, 2019 by BrittanyHighland Leave a Comment

I’m watching the sunset of life with a toddler in an RV. Two years old has always been a favorite age of mine, so this is something I’m mourning. Two is a beautiful year, full of vocabulary explosion, awkward moves, and generally feeling like I want to record every moment of this stage.

We’ve seen a lot of a change as a family since I wrote “Making Room for Baby in an RV” and “Making Room for a One Year Old in an RV.” In December 2018, right after Caspian turned two, we sold the 40-foot RV that had been our home for nearly five years. We lived out of our Jeep Wrangler for three months-most of that in the interior of Mexico. And then we bought a 25-foot Winnebago View.

Downsizing has been awesome. This RV model actually gives Caspian a dedicated space, which he calls his “own room.” In this article, you can expect to learn:

RV Wanderlust’s Moochdocking Wall of Gratitude

April 17, 2019 by BrittanyHighland Leave a Comment

RV Wanderlust Moochdocking Wall of Gratitude

We’ve been living in our 25-foot Winnebago View for just over five weeks now. Of those five weeks, we’ve “moochdocked” for more than three weeks.

If you’re not familiar with the term, moochdocking refers to RV camping on the private property of friends and family. While some properties have hookups of some kind, we arrive ready to dry camp. A place to park is enough for us!

Some people take offense at the name moochdocking, like it has a negative connotation. For us, it’s a fun word that’s been around longer than we’ve been RVing. We good-naturedly promote its usage.

Introducing Our Partnership With TechnoRV

October 28, 2018 by BrittanyHighland Leave a Comment

TechnoRV RV Wanderlust Partnership

It takes hustle to successfully run any small business. But it takes a special dose of perseverance and flexibility to run a business while traveling fulltime! We have a special respect for fellow traveling entrepreneurs, and felt an instant kinship when we met Eric and Tami Johnson of TechnoRV.

After getting to know the Johnsons’ business philosophy, work ethic, and product offerings for RV owners, we were thrilled to partner with them through their affiliate program. What this means for our readers is that you’ll start seeing links to TechnoRV, as we share the technology that has made our lives easier over the past five years of fulltime life on the road.

Why This Partnership?

There are a lot of affiliate programs out there, on top of companies that are constantly wanting to put paid articles on our blog or use our social media platforms to promote whatever they’re selling.

Am I Crazy to Combine Cloth Diapering With Fulltime RV Life?

August 7, 2018 by BrittanyHighland Leave a Comment

Cloth Diaper Guide for RVersI can’t remember the moment I decided to cloth diaper in an RV. It wasn’t something I planned for years before having #BabyNomad. But during the inevitable nesting phase of my pregnancy, I decided to look into it as an option.

I had a ton of questions. To be honest, I wasn’t sure cloth diapering was practical for me. I like doing things that are environmentally-friendly and economical. But I only have so many hours each day, and my time is valuable to me. So I have to weigh everything together. If something is going to take more time than I think it’s worth, like homemade baby food, then it’s a no-go.

When I first started researching cloth diapering and whether it was something that could mesh with the fulltime RV lifestyle, I got overwhelmed and gave up. Why are there so many types of cloth diapers? How many do I need to buy? How do you even put them on? Do I really have to use a special kind of laundry soap and diaper cream?

But I came back to my research again and again, tackling one little question at a time. As I result, I found the exact answers I needed, as well as confidence that cloth diapering was right for me, my baby, and our RVing lifestyle. [Read more…]

Making Room for a One Year Old in an RV

March 11, 2018 by BrittanyHighland Leave a Comment

Making Room for One Year Old in an RV

I have no data to prove this, but I think children are the second most common reason people decide not to RV. The first reason would be money-being unsure how to make a living on the road.

I’m proof that you can have children, as young as newborns, in an RV fulltime. On Dec. 4, 2016, when Caspian Theodore was one day old, we brought him home from the hospital to live in his new home on wheels. He’s one year old now, and we have no regrets about continuing our lifestyle of travel with him by our side.

Whether you have a one year old already, or you’re considering expanding your family and can’t picture how it will work, this article is for you. I’m pulling back the curtains to encourage you to pursue your dreams of travel.

If you haven’t already, you may want to read “Making Room for Baby in an RV,” which I wrote last year when Caspian was only two months old. If you’re past that stage already, then here’s what you can expect to learn in this article:

How This Fulltime RVer Ate Himself Out of Type II Diabetes

January 19, 2018 by BrittanyHighland 6 Comments

Cured Type II Diabetes With Keto Diet

For a long time, Eric disregarded what was best for his health. Considering his grandfather died from diabetes and his mother has lived with it for decades, his diagnosis came as a shock without being much of a surprise.

When Eric posted the news on Facebook last summer, a long-time acquaintance from our Austin online marketing circle happened to see it. This person, Mark Lyne, was diabetic and had been considering sharing his journey through a Facebook group.

This fledgling Facebook group-and Mark’s knowledge shared through it-was the impetus for Eric’s major lifestyle change. If not for Mark, it’s possible Eric would’ve spent the rest of his life following the conventional “wisdom” regarding diabetes care, on a rollercoaster with his disease.

➡️ Keep reading: “Coping With a Medical Diagnosis on the Road”

Instead of that scenario, Eric turned up the self-discipline and ate himself out of Type II diabetes in four months. [Read more…]

After 4 Years of Full-time RVing, What Do We Get as Christmas Gifts?

December 30, 2017 by BrittanyHighland 4 Comments

Full-time Rving Christmas Gifts

Not actually depicting our Christmas as full-time RVers

Arguably the greatest transition when becoming a full-time RVer is the shift from many possessions to few possessions. Before purchasing our 2004 Tiffin Phaeton and hitting the road in February 2014, Eric and I only had a two-bedroom apartment. Even so, we had so much to sell, donate, and throw away. Over our past four years on the road, we’ve done constant battle against clutter. So when it comes to Christmas gifts, ours look a bit different than many Americans. [Read more…]

Update on Eric’s Health and Sharing New Recipes

August 28, 2017 by BrittanyHighland 20 Comments

Eric Highland Diabetes Update

Eric Highland visiting the Biltmore House in Asheville, NC

Eric was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes on July 31. Earlier this month when I shared the news on our blog, we were still trying to get his blood sugar in the normal range of 80-130. Thank you for the outpouring of encouragement and advice. The least we can do is give you an update on how things are going here. [Read more…]
