Making Room for a Toddler in an RV

November 19, 2019 by BrittanyHighland Leave a Comment

I’m watching the sunset of life with a toddler in an RV. Two years old has always been a favorite age of mine, so this is something I’m mourning. Two is a beautiful year, full of vocabulary explosion, awkward moves, and generally feeling like I want to record every moment of this stage.

We’ve seen a lot of a change as a family since I wrote “Making Room for Baby in an RV” and “Making Room for a One Year Old in an RV.” In December 2018, right after Caspian turned two, we sold the 40-foot RV that had been our home for nearly five years. We lived out of our Jeep Wrangler for three months-most of that in the interior of Mexico. And then we bought a 25-foot Winnebago View.

Downsizing has been awesome. This RV model actually gives Caspian a dedicated space, which he calls his “own room.” In this article, you can expect to learn:

Am I Crazy to Combine Cloth Diapering With Fulltime RV Life?

August 7, 2018 by BrittanyHighland Leave a Comment

Cloth Diaper Guide for RVersI can’t remember the moment I decided to cloth diaper in an RV. It wasn’t something I planned for years before having #BabyNomad. But during the inevitable nesting phase of my pregnancy, I decided to look into it as an option.

I had a ton of questions. To be honest, I wasn’t sure cloth diapering was practical for me. I like doing things that are environmentally-friendly and economical. But I only have so many hours each day, and my time is valuable to me. So I have to weigh everything together. If something is going to take more time than I think it’s worth, like homemade baby food, then it’s a no-go.

When I first started researching cloth diapering and whether it was something that could mesh with the fulltime RV lifestyle, I got overwhelmed and gave up. Why are there so many types of cloth diapers? How many do I need to buy? How do you even put them on? Do I really have to use a special kind of laundry soap and diaper cream?

But I came back to my research again and again, tackling one little question at a time. As I result, I found the exact answers I needed, as well as confidence that cloth diapering was right for me, my baby, and our RVing lifestyle. [Read more…]

Making Room for a One Year Old in an RV

Making Room for One Year Old in an RV

I have no data to prove this, but I think children are the second most common reason people decide not to RV. The first reason would be money-being unsure how to make a living on the road.

I’m proof that you can have children, as young as newborns, in an RV fulltime. On Dec. 4, 2016, when Caspian Theodore was one day old, we brought him home from the hospital to live in his new home on wheels. He’s one year old now, and we have no regrets about continuing our lifestyle of travel with him by our side.

Whether you have a one year old already, or you’re considering expanding your family and can’t picture how it will work, this article is for you. I’m pulling back the curtains to encourage you to pursue your dreams of travel.

If you haven’t already, you may want to read “Making Room for Baby in an RV,” which I wrote last year when Caspian was only two months old. If you’re past that stage already, then here’s what you can expect to learn in this article:

After 4 Years of Full-time RVing, What Do We Get as Christmas Gifts?

December 30, 2017 by BrittanyHighland 4 Comments

Full-time Rving Christmas Gifts

Not actually depicting our Christmas as full-time RVers

Arguably the greatest transition when becoming a full-time RVer is the shift from many possessions to few possessions. Before purchasing our 2004 Tiffin Phaeton and hitting the road in February 2014, Eric and I only had a two-bedroom apartment. Even so, we had so much to sell, donate, and throw away. Over our past four years on the road, we’ve done constant battle against clutter. So when it comes to Christmas gifts, ours look a bit different than many Americans. [Read more…]

Making Room for Baby in an RV

Making Room for Baby in an RV

Babies are associated with stuff, lots and lots of stuff. If you’re an RVing couple considering a new addition, or have a baby in the family already and are weighing the pros and cons of RV life, you may wonder whether your dreams are remotely realistic. Can you even wash the dishes without waking the baby when your home is 40 feet long or less?

Eric and I have a two-month-old son, Caspian, and are beginning our fourth year of full-time RV travel. We had a lot of discussions about making room for baby in an RV. Some things we could plan for, but other times we couldn’t do much better than, “We’ll figure it out.” We’ve always said the RV lifestyle requires flexibility, and that’s never been more true. Hopefully this rundown of…

Quick Hello Before Baby Nomad Arrives

November 29, 2016 by BrittanyHighland 6 Comments

Baby Nomad 37 Weeks

Capturing the moment at 37 weeks

Well, this is it. Baby Nomad’s due date is this Saturday-only five days away. He seems pretty cozy in there, so I won’t be surprised if he shows up late. But one way or another, I expect to have a little boy in my arms this time two weeks from now. [Read more…]

What First-time Pregnancy Is Like for a Full-time RVer

September 22, 2016 by BrittanyHighland 4 Comments

Pregnancy and Full Time RV Travel

Pregnancy and child birth are two things people tend to picture a certain way. As I anticipated my first pregnancy, I had no frame of reference other than what I knew from word of mouth, limited research and maybe a little Grey’s Anatomy. As a full-time RVer with no plans to stop RVing, my main question was how is this going to work? [Read more…]

Why We’re Cutting Our 2016 Grand Loop Trip Short

June 2, 2016 by BrittanyHighland 17 Comments

We embarked from our home base of Austin, TX at the beginning of January to take our most ambitious RV trip to date. The aptly-named Grand Loop Trip would take us west to California through New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada, then north to Seattle before cutting east to North Dakota and going back south to Texas. It would take eleven months and more than 5,700 miles.

Alas, our epic Grand Loop Trip is not to be. [Read more…]
