December 31, 2019 by BrittanyHighland Leave a Comment

It’s been an incredible year-our sixth as full-time RVers. We’ve traveled so quickly that between work and family commitments, microblogging on Instagram has been most manageable! I’m excited to finally share these experiences with you here.

This is the companion piece to “2019 in Review: Stats and Camping Costs.” Make sure you read that article for a big picture view of our year.

And now, you’re in for a treat! We’re counting down from #19 to #1, with #1 being our top highlight of 2019. How many of these places have you visited?

Five Years Full-time RVing Review

I’m a wee late publishing this one, but the turn of the year was so crazy and the future so uncertain. All our thoughts were consumed by selling Meriwether, moving into our Jeep Wrangler, and overlanding through the interior of Mexico for 2-3 months.

But we bought another RV home sooner than expected and are now straddling the RV and overland lifestyles. And since 2018 was such an epic year (our favorite year of travel yet), it seems a shame to drop the ball on the annual review…even if it is a few months late.

So here goes. In February 2019, we marked five years of full-time travel. The year 2018 started and ended at our home base of Austin. After speaking at RV Entrepreneur Summit, we embarked on our Western Mountain Loop Trip. It was an unbelievable journey through Arizona, all five national parks in Utah, Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Glacier, the Dakotas, and more.

In the process, we drastically changed as travelers. We broke out of our comfort zone by dry camping for extended periods of time, driving our RV to a few crazy camping spots, and breaking our travel rhythm a number of times.

Off-road Adventures Through Big Bend National Park

April 29, 2019 by BrittanyHighland Leave a Comment

Off-roading in Big Bend National Park

Even though Texas is our home base, we didn’t visit Big Bend National Park (one of only two national parks in the giant state of Texas) until this year.

Our reason was straight-forward: we need Internet to work; we work full-time; there isn’t Internet at Big Bend; we can’t go.

But times change. While we still need Internet to work, we aren’t currently sticking to our old travel rhythm. Many of our community members will remember our rhythm from before: drive no more than 250 miles and stay for two weeks.

When we were staying everywhere for two weeks, of course we couldn’t stay somewhere with no Internet. But now that we’re breaking our own rules, we can pop in somewhere for a weekend and get out before the work week starts.

That’s exactly what we did in order to visit Big Bend National Park. We just couldn’t put off a visit any longer!

Caprock Canyons State Park, Where the Texas Bison Roam Free

March 13, 2018 by BrittanyHighland Leave a Comment

Guide Caprock Canyons State ParkWe followed the sidewalk almost directly across from our site, heading straight toward the bathhouse. As we left the campground, turning a corner through the dry Texas brush, furry figures came to a halt a few yards in front of us. We squinted, trying to discern between mounds of sandy dirt and earth-colored animals. The yelping from the sentinels, a high-pitched bark that gives the prairie dog its name, told us exactly where to look.

We were within sight of the trailhead, coming back from a five and a half mile hike, which included a rigorous climb and descent. I couldn’t believe my eyes as I whisper-shouted, “Look!” to Eric. Blocking our exit, a bull bison stood munching the tall grass. He had spotted us, so we slowly created our own trail back to the Jeep.

Two stories of many from our week at Caprock Canyons State Park in the Texas Panhandle. This underrated state park is unlike any place we’ve stayed in more than four years of fulltime travel. To think it’s in our home state, and we had never been there before this month.

You’ll never stumble upon it. You have to know about it to find it. But once you do, you’ll be immersed in wildlife and red rock beauty. This is home to the Texas State Bison Herd, a group of about 100 animals that literally roam free around the entire state park, including through the campground and onto hiking trails. [Read more…]

Oak Park Army Corps Campground

Oak Park Army Corps of Engineers campground in Dawson, TX

We knocked out our work this morning to get packed up. By 11:30 a.m., the RV and Jeep engines were running, and Caspian was in his carseat. I happened to look under Meriwether before telling Eric, “The front jacks are still down.” [Read more…]

Final Swing Into the RV Shop for Repairs Before Getting Back on the Road

RV Wanderlust Repair Updates

Normally we get all our repairs and maintenance done at the end of each year when we come back to Texas for the holidays. Of course, we make exceptions for repairs that can’t wait. But 2016 was different. We knew we were going to be in one area for months, and we didn’t want to invest in too much RV stuff when we had a baby about to arrive. (Secret: the baby was cheap. The new Jeep wasn’t.)

We decided to save the things we needed done before our next adventure, and make one last visit to Iron Horse RV in San Antonio before leaving Texas for our 2017 trip. As planned, we headed south from Austin last Wednesday. We didn’t get to Iron Horse [Read more…]

Baby Nomad 37 Weeks

Capturing the moment at 37 weeks

Well, this is it. Baby Nomad’s due date is this Saturday-only five days away. He seems pretty cozy in there, so I won’t be surprised if he shows up late. But one way or another, I expect to have a little boy in my arms this time two weeks from now. [Read more…]
