Five Years Full-time RVing Review

I’m a wee late publishing this one, but the turn of the year was so crazy and the future so uncertain. All our thoughts were consumed by selling Meriwether, moving into our Jeep Wrangler, and overlanding through the interior of Mexico for 2-3 months.

But we bought another RV home sooner than expected and are now straddling the RV and overland lifestyles. And since 2018 was such an epic year (our favorite year of travel yet), it seems a shame to drop the ball on the annual review…even if it is a few months late.

So here goes. In February 2019, we marked five years of full-time travel. The year 2018 started and ended at our home base of Austin. After speaking at RV Entrepreneur Summit, we embarked on our Western Mountain Loop Trip. It was an unbelievable journey through Arizona, all five national parks in Utah, Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Glacier, the Dakotas, and more.

In the process, we drastically changed as travelers. We broke out of our comfort zone by dry camping for extended periods of time, driving our RV to a few crazy camping spots, and breaking our travel rhythm a number of times.

Inspired by Lewistown, Montana to Always Give Tiny Towns a Chance

Lewistown Montana RV Trip

With over 600 miles to travel from Glacier National Park (Montana) to Theodore Roosevelt National Park (North Dakota), we needed to stop somewhere in between. When first glancing at a map, the Montana novice might feel rather discouraged. I-87 appears to be a stretch of nothingness for hours.

Undeterred, I zoomed to the mid-way point on the map and started looking up all those tiny towns on Campendium. I was sold by the reviews for a city park in the 6,000-person town of Lewistown, Montana.

Dry Camping Just Outside Glacier National Park

October 3, 2018 by BrittanyHighland Leave a Comment

Growing up, I knew about national parks like Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon, but for some reason Glacier National Park wasn’t on my radar until adulthood. Once we started traveling full-time, stunning photos from fellow nomads became impossible to ignore.

Established in 1910, Glacier National Park is located in Montana on the Canadian border. In fact, it continues right into Canada, where it becomes Waterton Lakes National Park.

This amazing stop was on our itinerary for 2016, but we had to cancel when I became pregnant and plans changed. Life happened again this year when we detoured from our Glacier route for an emergency trip to Seattle.

But nothing was going to stand in our way! With stops in Spokane and Coeur d’Alene, we were able to get back on course to see Glacier National Park.

Scrambling to Change Summer Plans in Bozeman, MT

Best Food in Bozeman Montana

Our stay in Bozeman didn’t turn out as planned. It was week two of Highland Family Summer Vacation 2018 with Javen (17) and Silas (14). We had just come from beautiful West Yellowstone, with a one-night stop in Gallatin National Forest.

We planned on adventuring in the Bozeman area like we normally do, but unexpected family news caused us to refocus and quickly change our travel plans.

West Yellowstone, Base Camp for National Park Exploration

West Yellowstone Base Camp for National Park

Our first visit to Yellowstone National Park was back in 2015, and it was only over a long weekend. This year, we knew we wanted to spend dedicated time in Jackson Hole and Grand Teton National Park, and go back to Yellowstone to explore the areas we didn’t get to in 2015.

We accomplished that first goal over two weeks at Upper Teton View. Then, as base camp for Yellowstone, we decided to stay in the town of West Yellowstone. [Read more…]

Breaking Our RV Travel Rule With 2,300 Miles in 5 Days

September 25, 2016 by BrittanyHighland 6 Comments

Dave Hardy Professional Truck Driver

My dad takes the wheel for 2,300 miles in five days

We have an RV travel rule. We don’t go farther than 250 miles in one day, and then we stay put for two weeks.

But there’s an exception to every rule. And for us, family is it. We had a campground reservation in the Seattle area through July 23, where we were spending the summer with our kids and Eric’s mom. But I had a long overdue OBGYN appointment scheduled in Austin, TX for July 28. With these priorities in place, we had no choice but the insane: cover 2,300 miles in only five days. [Read more…]
