Crisis Averted, Realigning With Return Trip East Through Spokane

September 19, 2018 by BrittanyHighland Leave a Comment

RVing in Spokane WA

Feeling much better about the wellness of Eric’s mom, we left Seattle to head back east. Though we spent three weeks in Seattle during our unexpected detour, we didn’t have to sacrifice any planned stops along our West Mountain Loop Trip.

But since our next destination was Glacier National Park, about 550 miles away, we broke the realignment trip into chunks. First stop: Spokane, WA.

We stayed in Spokane from July 21-26, 2018.

RV Campground in Spokane

Spokane was nowhere on our 2018 itinerary. Our first choice was Coeur d’Alene, but we weren’t having any luck finding a place we wanted to stay.

Fairchild Air Force Base FamCamp

We decided to pull into the FamCamp on Fairchild Air Force Base, which is right outside Spokane. We liked it so much that we stayed five days. We had shade and full hookups, loved meeting our neighbors, and took advantage of free (and much larger) laundry machines.

Say hello to my awesome RV ironing board (aka fold-up counter extension)

I actually went a little crazy with laundry, washing most of our curtains for the first time since Caspian was born.

And we made keto chicken nuggets for the first time

Where We Ate in Spokane

Outlaw BBQ

Like I mentioned, Fairchild isn’t located right in Spokane. It took a good 25-30 minutes to get anywhere central. But this was a good thing because it forced us to get groceries at the commissary, eat at home, and slow our roll.

I really cannot emphasize the size of these brisket nachos

Outlaw BBQ was our best meal out. The whole experience was excellent: service, ambiance, barbecue, cocktails, and dessert (you’ve got to see the dessert case).

Fatburger is a Beverly Hills-based chain with locations all over. We enjoyed it when we were in Los Angeles years ago, but hadn’t been back since. We had another great meal here. There are keto-friendly options, like the Skinnyburger with two hamburger patties on the outside, in place of buns.

What We Did in Spokane

Working outside in the shade with my bison mug from Yellowstone

We didn’t do a lot of blog-worthy things in Spokane. A lot of catching up on work and tidying up our home. After deep-cleaning my mother-in-law’s house for a couple of weeks straight, I was inspired to tackle everything I’d been putting off.

  • Playing outside
  • Quite the character
  • He loves his sunglasses

We did enjoy an afternoon walking around downtown. We were completely surprised by the big city features and feel. River Park Square is a glamorous shopping mall which leads right out to Riverfront Park.

Caspian running from the water in Spokane’s Riverfront Park

The park was bustling with activity on the summer weekend when we visited. So much going on, including:

  • Paved and gated track for people on rollerblades and scooters
  • Giant splash pad with water shooting from every side (Caspian was intimidated)
  • Carousel
  • Boardwalk trail along the river
  • Community piano anyone can sit down to play

507 N. Howard St.

There were also quite a few restaurants, wineries, and breweries within walking distance. So yes, downtown Spokane was definitely a pleasant surprise.

Swimming with Julie and Chad

We also got to see one of Eric’s best friends from high school, Julie, and her husband Chad. We usually hang out with them when we’re in Seattle. But this time we got to see the house they bought and take a dip in their swimming pool. Ah, the sticks and bricks life. We’re so happy they’ve found a place to love. But somehow, house visits always seem to reaffirm the fulltime travel lifestyle we’ve chosen.

Speaking of travel lifestyle, did you see the video we posted on Facebook today?
