How to Protect the Front of Your RV

April 3, 2015 by Eric Highland 5 Comments

How to Protect the Front of Your RV

Brittany and I have been RVing around the country full time for over a year now and we have to tell you that it’s truly a wonderful life - everything we ever hoped it would be and more.

For those of you who follow our blog at RV Wanderlust, you know we live an exciting and crazy life. But this life, just like any other, presents it’s own unique challenges.

While we love the road, the road does not necessarily love our home. All homeowners want to protect their investment, and it’s no different for those of us full time RVers who live in a moving home. Any RVer who has been on the road for any length of time will tell you that arguably the hardest part of your RV to protect from miles of travel is the front end cap. [Read more…]

RVillage: Platform for RVers We Use Daily

March 13, 2015 by Eric Highland Leave a Comment

RVillage Logo

To be honest, whenever someone tells us about a new online platform, page or group for RVers, we kind of wince and half heartedly agree to take a look. It’s not that we’re too cool for school, believe me. It’s just that we’re already a member of so many, and most of them we hardly ever use.

Hey, it isn’t personal, we just have a life to live and we don’t want to always be online if you know what I mean. After all, we’re supposed to be out exploring the country, right?

So Many Platforms, So Little Time

But this wasn’t always the case. When we first started full time RVing just over a year ago, we tried to be involved in every group, page and platform we could. [Read more…]

Update on RV Repairs and Maintenance: Second Half of 2014

January 10, 2015 by BrittanyHighland 10 Comments

Camping World RV Service

Taking care of our home is very important to us!

Any home you own, whether it has wheels or not, is going to need repairs and maintenance. It’s just a fact of life. Considering we live in a house composed of thousands of parts that are constantly being bumped and shaken, our first year on the road was not so bad as far as repairs were concerned.

The biggest inconvenience (and biggest difference between an RV and “normal” house) is that we have to vacate the premises whenever repairs are done. This takes careful scheduling, and usually means we collect maintenance items to knock out all at one time.

We’ve visited three repair shops since our big breakdown in July, which I want to describe here. I’ll conclude with an overview of all our repairs and maintenance in 2014, as well as associated costs. [Read more…]

Captain’s Remarks

09:35 - Part of the difficulty in keeping up with regular Captain’s log entries has been a lack of free time where we aren’t doing something spontaneous and fun. We have thoroughly enjoyed our time since we last updated the log from Williamsburg, VA.

For our faithful readers, we last left off after visiting the home of Thomas Jefferson (Monticello) and the lovely city of Charlottesville, VA. We’d been staying in Williamsburg, VA and visiting as many places in the Historic Triangle as we could in the time we were there.

On August 31st, we made our way back to Virginia Beach. It was time to head south. This time we stayed at Fort Story in Virginia Beach. We were there for two weeks. Here are some highlights [Read more…]

Building Friendships When You Live in an RV

September 6, 2014 by Eric Highland 6 Comments

Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art… It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things that gives value to survival.
-C.S. Lewis

As full-time RVers, we’re often asked, “What is the most difficult thing about full-time RVing?”

I could easily make a list of our standard answers. But one that we feel merits discussion, is building friendships when you live in an RV full time.

Eric and Brittany Highland with Ryan and Michele Newbrough

Our newest RV friends Ryan and Michele Newbrough. We’ve been talking for months and finally met up in Virginia Beach. We’ve already gone out twice and have a third time planned before we leave the area.

We start with the premise that friendship is usually predicated on the fact that you spend time in person with those whom you call friends. [Read more…]

Tackling Mold in Our RV

August 22, 2014 by BrittanyHighland 17 Comments

Mold in RV

Yikes! Mold in our RV!

“Oh…there’s mold down here” is sure to make anyone’s heart sink. We’ve noticed a couple of stray leaks near our front windshield during this abnormally wet summer. But just a couple of weeks ago, Eric noticed a patch of mold in the far corner of the carpeting under our steering wheel. Yikes!

The growth can’t be too old because I like to consider us observant. It’s also not due to any leak we know of, which means there’s water coming in from a mysterious location (not good). We haven’t been able to fix the source of the problem yet, but we jumped on treating what we could see. And it wasn’t pretty… [Read more…]

The Mystery of the Meriwether Ghost

August 12, 2014 by Eric Highland 6 Comments

Have you ever had one of those moments in life where the most bizarre and unexplainable thing happened?

The kind of thing that if you told people, they wouldn’t believe you?

The kind of thing where you wish Scooby and the gang were real?

Scooby Doo and the Gang

Where are you Scooby Doo? (Photo courtesy of austinot.com)

Well, I think we may have picked up a Confederate soldier ghost somewhere along our journey, and I’ve got him recorded! That’s right folks. We’ve got evidence. [Read more…]
