Bathing at the Buckstaff in Hot Springs, Arkansas

Buckstaff Bathhouse in Hot Springs

Buckstaff Bathhouse in Hot Springs, AR

One of the most interesting things we’ve ever experienced on our RV adventures so far was the Buckstaff Bathhouse in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

We were staying at Catherine’s Landing RV park, just 10 minutes away from Bathhouse Row. We left the park around 1:15pm, found street parking and arrived promptly at the Buckstaff by 1:30PM.

There are no reservations at the Buckstaff; it is first come, first served. They close for the lunch hour and reopen at 1:30PM, so we wanted to be first in line. We weren’t. We were about fourth in line even though the doors had just opened, but the short wait allowed us to take in the lobby which is grand. Immediately upon arrival, you feel like you’ve stepped back in time to the golden age of public bathing. [Read more…]

Steamy Adventures in Hot Springs, Arkansas

Brittany Highland at Quapaw Bathhouse

In front of Quapaw Bathhouse in Hot Springs, AR

We’re on our way to south central Kentucky where we’ll be spending about two months with Eric’s kids. After leaving Austin, we were planning to stay around Mt. Pleasant, TX for our first stop. The only reason was mileage - it was a logical resting point when we divided the total distance we had to travel.

While running our travel plans by our friends Jason and Kristin (the Snowmads), Jason insisted we push a bit further to Hot Springs, AR. Even though getting here meant a looongg nine hour travel day yesterday, we are already so glad we listened to Jason!

One day in Hot Springs, and I’m a fan for life. It has been an amazing day! This is one of my top five places we’ve been in our 13 months of full-time RVing. [Read more…]

Upper Falls at McKinney Falls State Park

Upper Falls at McKinney Falls State Park in Austin, TX

Brittany and I started our RV adventure at McKinney Falls State Park in Austin, Texas just over a year ago. Today we find ourselves here again. It is sublime. Simply put, we love this place and it’s time to get back into our RV blogging groove…

We’ve received so many messages from folks, asking us to update our blog. Thank you for that! It means a lot to us to know y’all follow our adventures. You are truly our family out here on the road and we’ve been blessed to meet so many of you in person!

We’ve been floored to have 1700+ of you follow us on Facebook, 700+ on Twitter, and even 100+ on Pinterest!

I know we haven’t updated our blog in awhile and this year we resolve to do better. We’ve actually hatched a plan… [Read more…]

2014 in Review: Stats, Photos, Adventures

January 9, 2015 by BrittanyHighland 10 Comments

When we saw our friends at Watsons Wander publish a blog post about their 2014, we wanted one too! We don’t think they’ll mind that we’re borrowing their idea and format. After all, we did help them find some pretty yummy BBQ in Gulfport, MS in 2014!

Since the start of our life as full-time RVers on February 21, 2014, these statistics describe our travels in a nutshell:

Number of States: 10

Number of Overnight Stops: 38

Where We Stayed: 1 state fairground, 1 national forest campground, 2 county parks, 4 state parks, 2 parking lots (visitor center, Lowe’s), 2 service center campgrounds, 9 military bases and 15 private campgrounds.

Free vs. Paid: Staying free isn’t our goal, but 3/38 locations we stayed in 2014 were free.

Camping Fees

Total: $7,854.00

Monthly Average: $654.50 [Read more…]

Following the Blues in New Orleans

June 17, 2014 by BrittanyHighland 3 Comments

Brittany Highland in New OrleansFishing poles and Blues. Peanut butter burgers and baked potatoes. Straw hats. Daiquiris and cover bands on Bourbon. Shrimp po-boys. The way everything smells after the rain. Beignets and cafe au lait. Decatur and Esplanade. Street art for sale. Haunted tours at night.

One of my favorite books, 14,000 Things to Be Happy About, reads just like that. Pages of lists of simple life things that make the heart smile. For a while, Eric and I would read a page of that book each day, putting an initial by the one thing on the page that made us happiest.

Today, my list of things to be happy about comes straight from a page in my life’s book, set in New Orleans. [Read more…]

Good Times in Galveston

Baby Brittany Highland in Galveston

Baby Brittany enjoying Galveston

We spent last week in Galveston, TX. Looking back, I have to say it was possibly my favorite stop during our RV journey so far. It was a mixture of some of my favorite things: good food, relaxation, historic sites.

The beachy/laidback atmosphere was exactly what we needed after our three harrowing (albeit productive) weeks at “home” in Austin.

Here’s a collection of what we did (and ate!). I hope you’ll use our fun experiences to plan your next trip. If I’ve left any questions unanswered, or I don’t mention your favorite Galveston stop, please let me know in a comment! [Read more…]

Visiting the Home of Tiffin Motorhomes in Red Bay, Alabama

April 16, 2014 by Eric Highland 18 Comments

1976 Allegro Gas RV by Tiffin

Red Bay, Alabama, where all Tiffin Motorhomes are built. Pictured is a 1976 Allegro Gas RV.

We veered away from the beauty of the Natchez Trace Parkway to make the obligatory stop that every Tiffin owner has to make: the trip to Red Bay, Alabama, home of Tiffin Motorhomes.

Yes, this is Meriwether’s birthplace. For those new to the blog, Meriwether is the name of our 2004 40′ Diesel Tiffin Motorhome, named after Meriwether Lewis. Even though we had only owned Meriwether for less than three months, there was a certain nostalgia in making the journey to where he was built. That and we needed some work done. [Read more…]

Week of Nashville Noshing and Nightlife

Downtown Nashville

The northern terminus of the Natchez Trace Parkway brought us to the vibrant city of Nashville, TN. After weeks on the Parkway, plus our week-long detour to Red Bay, AL, I was really looking forward to big city life for a while! In my excitement, I may have gone out on our first night to run a ton of errands…including a happy visit to Super Target.

Our time in Nashville spanned March 22-29, 2014. We had extremely cold weather for most of the week, dropping below freezing temperatures many nights. The weather put a damper on our sight-seeing, but we still made the best of our time!

Campground

We stayed at Nashville I-24 Campground in Smyrna, TN, about 20 miles from downtown Nashville. It wasn’t the [Read more…]

Bottoms Up at Dr. Pepper Museum in Waco, TX

Dr, Pepper Museum in Waco

You’ll find the museum at 300 S 5th St. in Waco

During our maiden voyage from Austin, TX to the Dallas area, we stopped over in Waco for lunch. (By the way, we ate at Bangkok Royal, purportedly the only Thai restaurant in town!)

As we followed directions to get to lunch, we passed a small street sign for the Dr. Pepper Museum. My favorite coke and one of my very favorite drinks - how could we resist?!
