Getting Our Kicks in Kingman, Arizona

March 17, 2016 by BrittanyHighland Leave a Comment

Kingman Arizona on Historic Route 66

Our travel itinerary is typically planned months in advance, and stays pretty firm. So while changes of plan can be disconcerting, they’re also exciting. We were supposed to spend two weeks in Sedona, followed by two weeks in Lake Havasu City. We never intended to go to Flagstaff, or Kingman to the west. But because plans changed, we ended up getting to stay in those two cities we wouldn’t have seen otherwise, and they were both super cool. [Read more…]

Spontaneous Stopover in Flagstaff, AZ

Class A Motorhome Flagstaff AZ

Snug in our site at Fort Tuthill Recreation Area in Flagstaff, AZ

We were heartbroken when we had to leave our first “real” wild camping spot in Sedona. I had been looking forward to living in the peaceful desert, on our own for a whole week, and really proving to myself that I could do it-and enjoy it!

But when our generator decided not to function, we had no choice but to pack up and find power. [Read more…]

Exploring in the Shadows of Sedona, Arizona’s Gorgeous Red Rocks

March 15, 2016 by BrittanyHighland Leave a Comment

Cathedral Rock Sedona Arizona

Cathedral Rock in Sedona, Arizona

I visited Sedona for the first time in 2009. It was a short day trip-just enough time for a Pink Jeep Tour and a stroll through Uptown. Touristy stuff. But I was captivated by the scenic beauty. Those red rocks! And I’ve wanted to return ever since.

So when Eric and I started planning our Grand Loop Tour for 2016, I insisted that Sedona have its place on our itinerary. I’ve changed a lot since 2009, so I found the things I experienced seven years ago had lost their charm for me. But, fortunately, I made new discoveries this time that fulfilled my hopes for our visit.

I’ve heard it repeatedly from friends who have visited Sedona. The first time they drive in, they can’t get over the surrounding mountains of rock, with their varied shapes and brilliant colors. Go see them for a slice of Arizona beauty, and stay a while for good food, memorable hiking and browsing this eclectic town. [Read more…]

Things to Do in Tucson, Arizona

Things to Do in Tucson

As I spend my afternoon writing about Tucson, I continue to be amazed at how much we found to do there, and the fact that I still have a list of things we didn’t do! It really is a fabulous city.

So, just to recap. We’ve written about the beautiful Sonoran Desert, an article that chronicles all of our outdoor adventures in Tucson. I’ve also covered our spontaneous afternoon in downtown Tucson, a guide to a full day of sight-seeing, eating and cocktail-ing in the center of town.

This will be my last article about things to do in Tucson until the next time we visit. It’s basically “everything else” that didn’t fit into the first two articles. But don’t consider these the leftovers. You’ll see tortillas larger than your face, and experience a 30-degree temperature change in the space of an hour. [Read more…]

Meet the Beautiful Sonoran Desert in Tucson

Justin's Diamond J RV Park Trail

The Sonoran Desert in Tucson, AZ

Eric and I fell in love with the Sonoran Desert during our stay in Tucson, Arizona. We loved the beauty of this unique desert, and the endless opportunities to hike and be out in nature. By the end of our stay, we were even testing each other to see if we could remember the various cacti and plant names. I actually have an article in mind that’s entirely devoted to all the things I love about the saguaro cactus.

For those who love exploring the outdoors, I think it would take multiple lifetimes for you to experience the many trails and nature areas available in the Tucson area. [Read more…]

Our Spontaneous Afternoon in Downtown Tucson, AZ

Taqueria Pico de Gallo Tucson

Ready to dig into our tacos at Taqueria Pico de Gallo

Neither of us had ever been to Tucson before, so we were both surprised at how big the city is, how beautiful it is and how much there is to do there. I can’t believe how much we stuffed into two weeks, and there was still more we didn’t get to.

As I started planning our article about Tucson and going through all our photos, I realized I’d need more than one piece to talk about everything we did (and ate). So let’s start with one of our first days in the city, which was unplanned and ended up being pretty perfect. [Read more…]

Our Failed RV Wild Camping Attempt

Wild Camping Sedona Arizona

Our wild camping spot between Sedona and Cottonwood, AZ

Aside from quick overnights on our way to somewhere, Eric and I have only ever dry camped at Xscapees’ Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta convergence, surrounded by friends who have inexhaustible knowledge when it comes to going off the grid.

So when we had the opportunity to do some real wild camping, all by ourselves like big kids, we were really excited. Our excitement increased as we researched BLM land near Sedona, AZ. We spent an afternoon scouting locations, and loved the look of Campendium’s Loy Butte Road spot. [Read more…]

What Did It Cost to Spend Two Weeks in Cancun?

March 1, 2016 by BrittanyHighland 6 Comments

Guide to Cancun ExpensesOur trip to Cancun has nothing to do with RVing. We only saw two RVs during the two weeks we were in Mexico. Neither of them were ours, and one of them was in storage (meaning, it was parked in a deserted parking lot and looked like it hadn’t been touched in a long time).

But you’ll cut us some slack, right? We figure RVers are an adventurous bunch who are interested in traveling everywhere, including internationally. And there was so much information we couldn’t find before we left, that we learned once we got to Cancun.

The most aggravating thing was that we had no idea what our daily expenses would be. What should we budget for meals, or for bus rides? Thank goodness for our bank teller in Tucson. When we told her how much we wanted to convert to pesos, she politely said, “You may not need that much.” [Read more…]

Laid-back Week in Las Cruces, New Mexico

January 27, 2016 by BrittanyHighland 3 Comments

RVing Las Cruces New Mexico

After an extremely long two days of driving through West Texas, we crossed the New Mexico border and arrived in Las Cruces, NM. There wasn’t any outstanding reason we chose Las Cruces, other than the fact that it was a good fit for our overall route.

Our week there was laid-back and low-key. We’re saving up for an international trip later this month, so we mostly ate at home and avoided tourist traps (confession: we’re sometimes susceptible to tourist traps). Despite the slower pace, we definitely enjoyed our visit. Here are the things we recommend, based on our experience in Las Cruces! [Read more…]
