One Day in Capitol Reef National Park, Utah’s Hidden Wonder

May 23, 2018 by BrittanyHighland Leave a Comment

Capitol Reef National ParkZion National Park. Bryce Canyon National Park. On to our third in Utah: Capitol Reef National Park.

This one required some special doing. We left Toquerville after work on a Friday, and drove 200 miles through Fishlake National Forest and along the edge of Manti-La Sal National Forest. We traveled through beautiful farm land bordered by grass-covered hills. I had no idea there was a place in the United States that looked like this. It reminded me of photos I’ve seen of the Scottish Highlands.

And then the grassy hills gave way to brilliantly colored, jagged rock. Through the small town of Torrey, with its inviting restaurants, outdoor adventure companies, and local motels. We used the Jeep to scout our dry camping options and ended up in Capitol Reef Overflow, about half a mile outside the boundary of the park. [Read more…]

Exploring Zion National Park Area in UtahWe had a fabulous time in Arizona, but we were more than ready to enter Utah. Believe it or not, Utah was the first state we added to our travel map since Montana in mid-2016. 😶

Our two-fold mission in Utah: visit all five national parks and do tons of off-roading with our Jeep. Will we succeed? [Read more…]

Loving Flagstaff for Off-roading, Natural Beauty, Proximity to Everything

April 16, 2018 by BrittanyHighland Leave a Comment

Visiting Flagstaff Arizona With RVI was mad at Flagstaff, Arizona, last time we were there. We only went because our first attempt at wild camping had failed miserably. As far as I was concerned, Flagstaff was an inferior Plan B to the grandeur of Sedona.

But time was kind to my memories of Flagstaff, and Eric never had a grudge like I did. So when it came time to plan our route for 2018, I gave Flagstaff another shot.

Good thing I did. Because after our two-week visit, I kinda think Flagstaff has made my Top 5 list of places we’ve stayed in four+ years of fulltime RVing.

The day we arrived in Flagstaff, our three older boys flew in for Spring Break. Eric drove to Phoenix to pick up Darius (20), Javen (17), and Silas (14). [Read more…]

I Could Live in Asheville…Oh Wait, I Did

Overlooking Blue Ridge Mountains Outside Asheville

Overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains behind Pisgah Inn

We pulled up to the office of Wilson’s Riverfront RV Park in Asheville, confused. The office was attached to an old mechanic’s shop. The business was deserted and we couldn’t see a campground anywhere. Eric took the Jeep and eventually found sites around the corner. There was a sign by the camp host, but no one was there either. A couple walking by said, “Just pick whatever open site you like and you can pay later.”

Welcome to Asheville, where everyone is low-key and the scenery is unforgettable.

Oh, did I not mention [Read more…]

When you start RV life, the wind fills your sails and everything you see is shiny. Don’t get me wrong-almost four years in, and the wonder of fulltime travel is still here. But problems catch up with you, no matter where you are or what you’re doing.

Problems caught up with us in Cave City, Kentucky. [Read more…]

Hot Springs, Arkansas, Two Years Later

Hot Springs Mountain Tower

RV Wanderlust on the observation deck at Hot Springs Mountain Tower

“What has been your favorite place to visit?” For the past two+ years, our answer has been Hot Springs, Arkansas. We had the best time when we visited in spring 2015. Our campground was beautiful; we loved the historical bathhouses at the national park and the Gangster Museum of America, and we frequently indulged in the burgers and cocktails at The Ohio Club.

So it was interesting to return more than two years later, with so many miles in between. It isn’t our favorite place anymore, though it’s still in our top 10, if not top 5. It’s not that there’s anything wrong with Hot Springs. It’s just that there’s so much [Read more…]

Lake Life in Idyllic Ashland, Oregon

Emigrant Lake County Park

Emigrant Lake County Park in Ashland, Oregon

Appreciate your patience with the radio silence! We had a vehicle debacle and an airline fail while we were staying in Portland (some of you may have read the story on Facebook), so we lost a few days of play dealing with real life.

So let’s get back to where we left off, in Ashland, OR, on Memorial Day weekend.

TL;DR: Ashland is charming and a wonderful place to stay. I don’t think we ever would’ve sought it out, were it not for Eric’s years of living in the Pacific Northwest and the fact he had visited a long time ago and remembered it fondly. After our two-week visit together, I’d say Ashland probably makes our Top 5 list of favorite places we’ve been during our RV travels. [Read more…]

Sequoia National Park in One Day

Sequoia National Park RV Wanderlust

Sequoia National Park and co-located Kings Canyon National Park often get overlooked because of their more popular neighbor two and half hours to the north, Yosemite. But after our one-day visit this month, we will be life-long fans. We can’t recommend enough that you visit if you’re ever in the area. The sequoia trees are breath-taking in their size, and their natural characteristics result in a deep respect. We can now say that we’ve seen the largest living thing on earth! [Read more…]

Livin’ Large in Las Vegas, NV

April 13, 2016 by BrittanyHighland 3 Comments

Eric and Brittany Highland Caesars Palace

Because of our generator issues and scheduling around Spring Break crowds, we had way too many short stays in a row. For us, short stays are anything less than two weeks. It may sound silly at first, but two weeks goes quickly for us because we work Monday-Friday. When we arrived in Las Vegas, our travel schedule finally started to normalize. We stayed for 11 nights.

We like big cities: the excitement of being around other people, the things to do and (usually) good food to eat. Las Vegas provided a balance because we stayed on the outskirts in a peaceful campground, but we were only 20 minutes from the city center. [Read more…]

Death Valley National Park in One Day

April 4, 2016 by BrittanyHighland 11 Comments

Death Valley National Park

This is our first year of being intentional about visiting all of the National Park Service sites near us as we travel. In the past, we practically drove right past a ton of places because we forgot to research our surroundings. Or-even worse for this slightly-OCD girl-we went, but forgot to get our passport stamp!

One tool has made it simple to track our proximity to NPS sites lately, and that’s the free mobile app, National Parks by Chimani. We use the map view to zoom into our location and see what’s around us. Then we can click on each location for more information. And once we’ve visited, we can record the year we were there. Totally fun for NPS-lovers and list-makers.

Thanks to the app, I know we’ve visited four national parks, three national monuments and one national recreation area so far in 2016. The latest: Death Valley National Park. [Read more…]
